Request data on parking tickets issued, revenue, and appeals.

Councils enforce parking restrictions and issue penalty charge notices. You can find out which streets are most heavily enforced, how much revenue parking generates, and how often drivers successfully appeal.

Your local council’s parking or roads department. Find your council on the Commissioner’s directory of Scottish public authorities. You can also send your request through WhatDoTheyKnow, which publishes responses online.

Tips#

  • Asking for the top 20 locations keeps the request manageable. If you need data for a specific street, name it instead.
  • Some councils publish annual parking reports. Check your council’s website first.
  • Any surplus from parking penalties must be ring-fenced under a statutory hierarchy: off-street parking provision comes first, then public transport, then road improvements. You can make a follow-up request to find out how the surplus was spent.
